The Wedding DJ Playlist – A Definitive Guide

January 7, 2019 By //  by Jamie 1 Comment

As an Event DJ, I have the pleasure of being a part of a number of weddings each year. Wedding reception bookings make up a large proportion of the work I carry out, and they are definitely some of the most enjoyable gigs. Being able to create the perfect Wedding DJ Playlist is something which is important to me. It takes time, and the content can vary greatly from couple to couple depending on a number of factors, not least their musical tastes. While I appreciate the rare occasions I’m given free licence to play whatever I personally feel is most suitable, there is usually a serious amount of input from the clients prior to their big day.

Setting the Mood

I usually go high energy from the outset where weddings are concerned. The majority of the crowd are likely to be in jovial mood by this point of proceedings and more than ready to boogie. The first dance will generally be a slow ballad, where guests are invited to join the bride and groom at some stage. Where to go from here? Well, one option is to follow up with another ballad or slow dance number initially, and then takes things up tempo. Bruno Mars’ Marry You is a solid if somewhat unimaginative transition track. Disco tends to work well with mixed age groups. The early stage of proceedings is also a good time to get the kids involved should they be in attendance, and putting on a few cheesy child friendly songs at this point doesn’t kill the mood. It can actually help to get people onto the dancefloor with the little ones in tow.

The First Dance

This is obviously a personal choice from the newlyweds, and arguably the focal point of the evening. I’m a fan of the more obscure selections, when you know some thought has gone into the song choice and there is meaning behind it. Couples will often go for the most popular chart ballad of the time which is absolutely fine, but I feel it’s a real waste of what should be a once in a lifetime event. Ed Sheeran’s Thinking Out Loud and All of Me by John Legend are the two most popular first dance tracks of recent years. Some of the more interesting and original options include Angels by The XX, Phil Collins’ A Groovy Kind of Love and Heart-Shaped Box by Nirvana.

Wedding DJ Playlist Essentials

Those of you looking for inspiration and ideas can do a lot worse than looking through Spotify. A search for wedding playlists will bring up a multitude of results and while there you will discover some shockers, Spotify works well as a starting point. Here are some tracks you are likely to hear at the majority of weddings;

Wedding DJ Playlist Top Ten

Come On Eileen – Dexys Midnight Runners

Sweet Caroline – Neil Diamond

YMCA – Village People

I Wanna Dance With Somebody – Whitney Houston

Don’t Stop Believin’ – Journey

Marry You – Bruno Mars

Uptown Funk – Mark Ronson

September – Earth Wind & Fire

Brown Eyed Girl – Van Morrison

Dancing Queen – ABBA

Bottom Line

A successful Wedding DJ Playlist relies upon the client and DJ working in harmony. While it’s important for the bride and groom to have a significant amount of input when it comes to the songs they want to hear, the DJ needs to be given freedom to switch things to some extent should a change be required. Admittedly, the happy couple are the priority, but getting all the guests dancing and enjoying themselves is key to creating memories and making the reception an evening to remember. In my experience, the tried and trusted classics are the songs that should make up the bulk of any Wedding DJ Playlist. The DJ also needs to be flexible and expect a number of requests from the crowd on the night. It’s impossible to please everyone when it comes to an event with such a wide variety of attendees, but a skilled DJ will be able to create an atmosphere that keeps people on the dancefloor and talking about the wedding for years to come.

How Much Does a Wedding DJ Cost?

December 13, 2018 By //  by Jamie Leave a Comment

How much does a wedding DJ cost? This is a question that I see and hear asked a hell of a lot, both online and in day to day life in the real world! Booking a DJ is one of the key tasks for any couple that are planning a wedding. Finding an individual who is able to match your exact requirements can be difficult enough, but knowing the amount you should be paying for  professional wedding DJ is arguably the most difficult obstacle to overcome. For me, this is due to the fact that prices range so wildly. I’ve heard of quotes as low as £150, and as high as £2,000. So,what is a fair price for a wedding DJ?

While I can’t give a definitive answer to that question, I am able to provide advice as well as the benefit of my years of experience in the industry. Let’s start by breaking the cost down into an hourly rate. All DJ’s work differently, but I will base this around a typical booking for myself.

Prior to the Event
Liaising with client, music preparation, admin – 1 to 3 hours

Evening of the Event
Loading of equipment and travel – 1 hour
Unloading of Equipment and Setup – 1 to 2 hours
Playing Time – 5 to 6 hours
Take down, loading of equipment and travel home – 1 to 2 hours

That is a maximum of 14 hours work there. I’d say the norm for me is closer to 9 or 10. The average hourly wage in the UK is around £11.50. That would equate to £161 for the 14 hours, £115 for what an average gig looks like for me. Is a skilled DJ and his equipment worth more than the national average wage? Should the unsociable hours be taken into consideration? For me, the answer is yes to both of these questions.

What is a Fair Price for a Wedding DJ?

So what is a fair hourly rate? It’s difficult to pinpoint and exact amount, and it should differ from DJ to DJ based on skillset and experience. However, I feel that a range of £25-£35 is what I would consider fair. (Unless of course you’re looking to booking Calvin Harris or the like, then it might be a few shillings more!).

I’ve seen an invoice from a DJ for a friend’s wedding for £1,200. This included an additional £200 for some letters spelling out L O V E to be on display. I don’t think money was too much of a concern for them. If you’re fortunate enough to be in a similar position, and some small props completely unrelated to the music are of importance to you, then extras like this are worth paying more for. At the end of the day, the cost of a Wedding DJ will come down to budget, and personal preference. Whether the client is getting value for money is another matter.

A Higher Price Does not Guarantee a Better DJ

I’ve seen guys turn up to events with a tiny controller, ancient speakers and cables everywhere, but still put on a great show. I’ve also witnessed individuals with state of the art equipment and a polished look, who are charging a fortune, absolutely stink the place out. There are a lot of good DJs out there, as well as a number of bad ones. Paying over the odds doesn’t mean you are going to be getting a higher class of Wedding DJ.

My Advice When Booking a Wedding DJ

Set a Budget
Most couples have a budget for their wedding. Include a budget for your DJ. This will help narrow down the field, and also prevent you spending a colossal amount of money unnecessarily that could be put to better use. My recommendation would be £500 top end. You can find good DJs for less money, but paying more than this is not necessary to find someone who is capable of doing a good job. Ignore platinum and gold packages that include high definition sound, super-duper lasers and flashing hearts. These should all come as standard for one price, or be included as options at no extra cost. If the DJ has this equipment at his disposal and the client is already being charged a fair price, there should not be additional costs.

Word of Mouth
Arguably the best piece of advice I can give is to get a DJ recommendation from someone you trust. This is a surest way to find a capable Wedding DJ outside of having seen the DJ in action yourself. I don’t really spend any money on advertising other than a listing on Yell, which is more about presence than getting any actual leads. Word of mouth is how I have grown my client base, and it’s also most reliable method for couples trying to identify suitable musical entertainment for their big day.

Reviews, Reviews, Reviews
The majority of DJs will have an online presence. This will include reviews, testimonials and feedback from previous clients. I’d likely steer clear of anyone who is unable to provide these. Facebook is always a good barometer. You can see where the reviews have come from. It’s also worth visiting sites like Add To Event, where you can be confident that the reviews are nearly always genuine.

Past Event Pictures and Videos
Check out any prospective DJ’s past event galleries and videos to get a feel for the type of party vibe he or she will be able to create. Better yet, cross reference the dates with any reviews you can find. This may sound like overkill, but it ensures everything is above board, and will give you greater peace of mind. This is especially important where booking a Wedding DJ is concerned.

Ask Questions
You obviously want to ask any Wedding DJ about costs, but don’t be afraid to probe further. Ask what’s included in the price, be clear about your musical like and dislikes, ask about experience, and where they have worked recently. A face to face meeting prior to a wedding is not an unreasonable request. I am always happy to meet with couples who don’t already know me. It’s more personal than doing everything via email, and also gives the client increased peace of mind.

Be Clear About What You Want
Although I advise giving your DJ the freedom to do their job, it’s also important to be clear about exactly what you want. This would be in terms of the music, the atmosphere and also DJ performance style. Some couples will enjoy a Wedding DJ who is constantly on the mic and interacting with the crowd, others will prefer a DJ who lets their mixing skills do the talking. I always appreciate as much information as possible in advance, and I will always be honest with any couples I don’t feel like I’d be a suitable match for. While this is a rare occurrence,it can happen. Any reputable DJ will do the same. I really hope this article has been helpful to anyone trying to find out how much does a wedding DJ cost. Top Five Reasons to Hire a Professional DJ

November 15, 2018 By //  by Jamie Leave a Comment

If you have an upcoming birthday, wedding or similar event planned, you may be deciding whether or not you need a pro DJ to be present. If you have a Spotify subscription and a portable speaker, it could be tempting to just plug in and press play! This might well work for some people, but here’s five reasons why it’s likely more prudent to book a professional DJ.

1 – Pro Grade Audio Equipment
Your Bluetooth speaker may well sound amazing in your own home, but it could be a very different story in even a small to mid-sized party venue. The noise from guests will quickly drown out any portable device, and this will be particularly apparent if the speaker is not elevated on a stand. Having professional-grade loudspeakers at your disposal will make a world of difference. The sound will carry and give the required clarity and dynamics to keep your party rocking rather than whimpering along!

2 – DJ Experience
There’s no substitute for the experience and level of service you will receive from any professional DJ worth his salt. The DJ you hire will be set up and ready for action before any guest arrive, then set the tone and enhance the atmosphere for the duration. You can rely on his or her judgement to switch the mood when required, and potentially take on a master of ceremonies role if you so wish.

3 – Lighting
My personal experience has taught me that guests rarely enjoy dancing via bright light bulbs, or the awful fluorescent tubes you often find in older function rooms and the like. Hiring decent event lighting, whether that be an extravagant laser display or just simple uplighting, will cost almost as much as a DJ. If you are planning on splashing out on lighting, booking a DJ who already has this at his or her disposal is a no-brainer.

4 – Music Library and Mixing
A homemade Spotify playlist or two is no substitute for a live DJ. No computer or app is able to mix the tracks the way a DJ can. If the crowd isn’t feeling your playlist, there is no easy way to switch things up. An Event DJ can keep their eyes on the dance floor at all times and will know when a change of song or style is necessary. They will also know which tracks work well together, and the best way to keep people dancing.

5 – You Can Relax
Do you really want to be messing about trying to stay on top of the music at a party where you should be enjoying yourself? A birthday is bad enough, but your own wedding is just insane! I realise a number of people have a budget to work within, but a DJ doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. If you factor in the full service and everything you get for your money rather than thinking of them as just a button presser, hiring a professional DJ makes sense more often than not.

The DJ Equipment I Use and Why

August 3, 2018 By //  by Jamie Leave a Comment

I have used a variety of different DJ equipment over the years. Thanks to the internet, you can undertake a vast amount of research prior to making a significant purchase, but there is no substitute for getting hands. I need to know what works in terms of usability, portability and most importantly, sound quality.

Having begun my Mobile DJ career on vinyl using 1210’s in the 90s, I’m always keen to replicate the feel of those turntables. At the same time, I need to ensure rock solid reliability while keeping all the practicalities in mind. At this moment in time, I feel I have a set up which is a close to perfect as I have ever had, or am likely to be able to achieve.

Here is my current set up and why it works for me.

Numark NS6II
My DJ Controller of choice. This thing is a tank. I’ve flirted with various DJ Software, but always come back to Serato and the NS6II is currently top of the tree for me when it comes to Serato controllers. A lot of DJ Controllers, even those at the high end of the market, are largely made of plastic and have a rather cheap feel. The NS6II has an all metal construction and all the inputs and outputs an Event DJ could ever need. The dual mic inputs can come in particularly useful for Wedding DJs, while the display in the center of the jog wheels really makes the controller pop.

Apple Macbook Pro
I have been using a Mac for around seven years now and as far as I’m concerned, it’s the only option if you’re a professional DJ. The initial outlay for one of these bad boys is significant, but handle with care and a Macbook will last you a number of years. Mine is solely used for DJing purposes and means I have peace of mind when arriving at any gig. I’d recommend a screen size of 15 inches to ensure you have enough real estate to incorporate both waveforms and your track details comfortably.

Sennheiser HD 25 Aluminium Headphones
The Sennheiser HD 25 is an absolute classic and I’ve personally never used anything else. They are the industry standard for a reason. I treated myself to the limited edition aluminium version a couple of years ago, but I’m also a big fan of the Sennheiser HD 25 Light. These come in a little cheaper than the standard version and are a solid option if the split headband and rotatable ear cup aren’t deal breakers.

AKG D5S Microphone
This dynamic vocal microphone receives five star ratings across the board, and for good reason. The AKG D5 provides superb vocal clarity, and has never let me down. A big issue for mobile discos and the like is feedback when using microphones. I have performed at various venues in Bexleyheath and Sidcup where the acoustics are less than ideal. Since employing the AKG D5, any problems with feedback have been eliminated. This mic also appears to interact very well with the Numark NS6II. There are two versions of the microphone, the D5 and the D5S. The S simply has an on/off switch where the standard model does not. This enhancement is definitely worth the small additional cost.

Electro Voice ZLX-15P
Having spent a number of hours listening to various powered speakers, the EV ZLX range stand head and shoulders above anything else in their price range. These speakers are relatively lightweight for their size and power, and a pair of the 15’s will provide enough output for any mid size venue. Yamaha would be the only other brand I could recommend as an alternative, with the DXR range producing a comparable sound but you’ll pay roughly £200 more per speaker. A pair of EV ZLX-15P’s is a great choice for any Event DJ or musician.

Top Five Things to Consider When Choosing Your Wedding DJ

August 3, 2018 By //  by Jamie Leave a Comment

Selecting a DJ for your wedding can feel like a daunting task. Once your date is set, there are so many arrangements to make, and the DJ can be easily forgotten. Some venues solve this problem for you with an in house resident, but this isn’t always the case and selecting a wedding DJ yourself can actually be an enjoyable experience! Here are our top five things to keep in mind when making this important choice for your big day.

1 – What Style of Wedding DJ Do You Want?
All DJs have their own unique style and your own personalities will likely play a role in the kind of Wedding DJ you decide to make a booking with. My personal preference is for someone that’s laid back, proficient on the decks and isn’t talking throughout every track. Some people prefer a DJ to be really animated and more in your face. Make sure you know what you want for your wedding prior to booking the DJ. This should also include the music genres you want to hear on the night.

2 – The Price
I know that fees vary quite dramatically where Wedding DJs are concerned, but don’t fall into the trap of thinking the higher the price the better the DJ. A lot of these inflated costs are style over substance. A friend of mine was recently married and showed me the invoice from his DJ. The words ‘upgrade’ and ‘enhanced’ always set my alarm bells ringing, and they featured heavily on this piece of paper! A good DJ likely won’t be cheap, but they also won’t attempt to confuse the client with various unnecessary add-ons. Get some quotes to give yourselves an idea of price ranges, then set a budget using those as a starting point.

3 – Word of Mouth
If this is your first time booking a DJ, a recommendation from a friend or colleague can be worth its weight in gold. If you trust this person’s opinion, then a word of mouth endorsement will probably save you a lot of time. Make this Wedding DJ your first point of contact and if you like what he or she has to say, arrange a face to face meeting. Your Wedding DJ search could be over as quickly as that.

4 – Insurance
Public Liability Insurance is now a must as far as wedding venues are concerned. Any reputable DJ will have this cover and you should ask to see a certificate prior to making any booking. In addition, some locations will insist on all DJing equipment being PAT tested. Again, the majority of Wedding DJs should have had this electrical testing carried out and it is another matter worth checking when undertaking your enquiries.

5 – Testimonials and Reviews
All Wedding DJs will have a web presence of some sort. Most will have a website and Facebook page as a minimum, and these should both include testimonials, and or reviews. This is where your own judgement will need to come into play. One thing I’d always look for is pictures of said events to see if they correspond to the dates and names on the reviews. Even if you can unearth one or two pieces of positive feedback that are backed up with images, I’d say that’s sufficient. Facebook is also helpful on this front because you can often see exactly who has left the review.
